White Whale, and Plaque, reflect Mallary’s interest in the archaic art of New Mexico, particularly the Indian petroglyphs. For the first time he also began to work consistently on an ambitious scale. In part this may have been a response to the vast spaces of the Southwest and also to the fact that, for the first time, he was working in a studio which could accommodate large works.
